I have lived in the Marlborough area for 10 years. The last 8 years in Marlborough itself with my two sons Sam and Bertie.

My first love is fundraising for a good cause, I have in the past been very lucky to have worked on the PTA at St Peters along with my then partner in crime Sue Stoker. I have been involved with the Jubilee Children’s Tea Party, Spirit of Christmas, Marlborough Carnival, Marlborough Cricket Club – Juniors and more recently the Kelham Garden Designer Sales.

After each event you stand back and think you need a break but very soon you realize that you are missing the buzz. I am passionate about the community and the causes I have raised money for in the past. This year Caroline Clarkson Cowles, Angela and Rob Dickens and many more stalwart members of the Carnival Committee are intending to re launch the Marlborough Carnival with a Carnival Fun Day on the Common on Sunday 14th September. I am really looking forward to helping out and Marlborough Shopping is proud to be one of the hopefully many sponsors of this event. If anyone would like to help or offer sponsorship please contact Caroline Clarkson Cowles on 01672 514727. We need you!

After fundraising locally I knew there were few places to advertise an event and over a steaming coffee at a rugby match one morning Angela and I decided to help showcase Marlborough by creating a stylish online directory guide, featuring shops, businesses and local events.

Whether you are looking for a wonderful lunch, the perfect gift, a new car or something to do at the weekend, Marlborough has a fantastic selection of independent shops, businesses, restaurants, cafes and events throughout the year to suit everyone and we wanted the whole world to know about them.

‘Putting Marlborough on the Map’ is what it is all about!

I met Cesca when I moved to Marlborough in March 2001 and with four sons between us, all of a similar age we quickly got to know each other as we met frequently on cold mornings at the Rugby Club. When I decided to be a rugby coach host one summer, Cesca came to my rescue as I struggled with my limited cooking abilities to feed several very hungry rugby players every night for a week!

Cesca and I spent a great deal of time talking about businesses in Marlborough and how they could get the best value from their marketing budgets.

Through various consultancy projects I had worked frequently to help develop strategies and content for internet sites and always felt the frustrations of smaller companies who knew exactly what they wanted and where they wanted to be but struggled to compete with larger organizations to achieve high performance, well optimized websites. How will people find my business? How could they gain maximum exposure for their business in as many searches as possible?

So the idea began to emerge, of a community based business website, for independents in Marlborough and the surrounding areas. This could work on many levels, Cesca and I both believed in Marlborough as a fantastic place to work, live and socialize and it was apparent that in addition to the many shops and businesses here were many artists, fundraisers and charity events all needing to publicize their work or and events.

So if we could design and build a website, that represented great value for advertising, maximum opportunities for exposure to potential customers, even those that didn’t know they were looking for you and publicity for Marlborough too- we would have a really good product!

After weeks of research, many cups of coffee and late nights, www.marlborough-shopping.co.uk emerged in mid January 2008. The site is very new and already achieving great results – we are working on it constantly – to develop new ideas and would love to hear what you think.
